Platinum Jubilee Party!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped make our Jubilee party such an enjoyable and successful event. It was well attended and great to see St Martin’s residents amongst the visitors.  It was a lovely sociable event, the band were great plus it didn’t rain!

Thank you to the Jubilee planning team for all their organising, gathering of items, driving etc and all the volunteers who climbed ladders, hung bunting, erected gazebos and umbrellas, laid tables and loaded and unloaded tables and chairs then loaded and unloaded tables and chairs again!

What a wonderful community we live in! 🇬🇧👑🍰🍷🎈🌺🇬🇧👑🍰

The Big Tidy Up 2021 – THANK YOU! 🙏

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came and joined in The Big Tidy Up in the square today! 🎄🌟

We swept leaves, cleaned benches, swept more leaves, picked up litter, swept more and more leaves, shifted logs, and did I mention that we swept leaves? 🤣🤣🤣

At 4.30 we turned on the lights and had a well deserved beer or mulled wine courtesy of Joanne. It was so lovely to see so many friends and to welcome new neighbours.

Thank you everyone!🎄🌟

The BIG Christmas Tidy Up – Sunday 5 December 2021, 2pm onwards

It’s this time of the year again! 🎄Weather permitting, we will be weeding, washing the benches, sweeping, planting bulbs and tidying up the square.

For the Christmas edition, we will also be putting up some Christmas lights, followed by mulled wine and mince pies from dusk. 🧁🥃

We hope to see all our neighbours! Please bring green bags, gloves and any gardening equipment which may be of use.🧤🍃 Any refreshments also welcome. 😀

Community Gardening Day – Sunday 7 November

We did quite a lot during the last community gardening day, tidying up around the edges of the square, trimming the hedges, raking up the leaves and mowing the lawn. Nevertheless, it is getting very autumnal out there and we will have many leaves to tidy up. The next gardening gathering will be on Sunday 7 November from 1pm. Everyone is welcome!

*SAVE THE DATE*

The Big (Autumn/Winter) Tidy Up will take place on Sunday 5 December from 2pm with mulled wine and mince pies from 4.30pm. More details to follow.

Community gardening Sunday 12 September, 1 pm

Dear all,

We have a new power tool ready for action and many hedges in desperate need of a trim. Hope you are available for a free work out session in the park today from 1ish!

Please bring gloves, garden recycling bags, a good mood and energy for a pleasant afternoon spent together!

Local Area Resources

Hello! Thanks to everyone who participated to the tidy-up last Sunday. A couple of us got distracted chatting about the history of the square and I thought it would be a good idea to start compiling a list of resources highlighting the rich heritage of our local area. I’ll make a start with a couple of sites that I came across at work at the London Metropolitan Archives. Please get in touch with your suggestions!

The London Picture Archive

https://www.londonpicturearchive.org.uk

Managed by London Metropolitan Archives (LMA), it provides free online access to over 250,000 images of London from the collections at LMA and Guildhall Art Gallery.

Searching for “Wilton Square” on London Picture Archive

There are a number of different ways to search and browse the images on the London Picture Archive. Using the search box (or Advanced Search) is the best way to ensure that you see all of the images which might be relevant, but you can also browse a selection on The London Picture Map or use our subject categories.  Try searches like “Wilton Square”, “Rosemary Branch”, “Regent’s Canal”, “Welsh Chapel”. Please note that not all of the LMA image collections are currently available here; there are around 2 million photos, prints, drawings and maps in the storage rooms.

The London Picture Map allows you to browse our collections geographically and it’s a great way to discover images of a particular street or building.

London Picture Archive Street Map

You can search the map by entering a term in the white search box. While you are browsing the map, it will load all of the image markers for the area visible in the frame. For example, if you zoom out to view the whole of the Greater London area, thousands of image markers will load, and this takes a few seconds. As you zoom in, fewer image markers are loaded and the process becomes quicker. Clicking on ‘Browse Results’ will show you all of the images which are on the map at that moment.

Layers of London

www.layersoflondon.org/

Layers of London brings together a really important collection of digitised historic maps, photos and crowd-sourced histories. The website allows you to interact with and contribute to many different ‘layers’ of London’s history from the Romans to the present day. These layers include: historic maps, old pictures of buildings, films, recordings, as well as stories about people who have lived and worked in London over the centuries. I particularly like the fade in and out function across the layers. Here’s what it looks like with the Bomb Damage layer.

Community gardening next Sunday 11 am

I hope you are all enjoying your weekend! We popped to the square and took some pictures of all the pretty flowers popping up over there. Lindy, Ellen and Philip really did an excellent job planting all those bulbs!

Do remember that the community gardening day is next Sunday. We will meet at 11 am on the square.

I leave you with some pictures of the pretty.

Compost spreading

We seem to have finally gotten over the compost hill as GoodGym  came out in force to help us move the last of it off the lawn in preparation for the council’s work to aerate, scarify, level (with the correct compost!) and drill seed the lawn areas. You can read the GoodGym report here.

We have seen signs of (happy) life on the square as the spring flowers start poking their heads out and Hellebores and anemone continue to flower. We had a very successful planning meeting on the 22nd – thank you to everyone that attended.

Some exciting plans afoot- we will shortly be placing three options with planting layouts for the square on this site as well as the square itself and would greatly appreciate your feedback on which you think would be best for the park.

Don’t forget, it’s Community gardening this Sunday the 5th at 10 am!

I leave you with pictures of last night’s antics.
